Learning to properly layer your clothing to look chic and trendy (and not bulky and lumpy) can be a fine art. Fortunately, with our top layering tips, you can go from shab to fab!
1. Always start with a very light, breathable base layer. This is the layer that’s going to be making the most contact with your skin, so make sure it’s a light nylon or breathable cotton.
2. Contrast colors. If your camisole that serves as your base layer is white, choose a black or brightly colored outer layer to make the two stand out against one another.
3. Contrast styles. Remember that the whole point of layering your clothes is to make each one really pop. One idea is to choose a
long camisole with a round neck, then add a shorter, chunky jacket to the top layer.
4. Consider your height. The taller you are, the more layers you can benefit from. If you’re on the short side, stick to just a couple of layers. If you’re self-consciously tall, several layers can help decrease the appearance of height.
5. Keep lighter colors on the bottom. Starting out with a dark base layer color can make your outfit appear bottom heavy. Keep your base layers in light colors, and add bolder, darker colors to the top.
6. Accessorize! Add scarves, long necklaces and chunky jewelry to add to the layered look without having to pile more clothes on.
7. Think below the waist & outside the box. Add leggings to your
modest skirts, put wide belts over your top layer and go with boots or a chunky shoe. Adding a hat or other hair adornments can also add a great touch to a layered look.
8. Mix up sizes. You’ll want to choose a base layer that fits more snugly, while your outer layers should be of differing, looser fits.
9. Dress for the weather. It’s possible to layer and be comfortable even in warm weather, but it will take additional planning ahead of time. It’s no fun to be fashionable if you’re miserable!
10. Be bold! Don’t be afraid to try new looks, switch out layers and experiment until you have found the perfect layered look.
